Hello Boo-tiful friend, Happy Halloween!
October 31st always makes me feel like a kid again, no matter how old I get. I have always loved this holiday. I’ve never been one for the dark and scary side of Halloween, but I’ve always loved the light-filled traditions around this time of celebration.
I love the honoring of our ancestors (and our new tradition of watching the movie Coco). I love visiting the pumpkin patch, carving out the pumpkins and roasting the seeds. I love jumping in piles of autumn leaves and making arts and crafts with all the different colored shapes. I love the excuse to eat a treat. And I love the creativity of coming up with a fun costume for trick-or-treating!
Growing up we never had the option of going to Target and getting a store-bought costume. There was no such thing. My four siblings and I would sit down with our mother and try to come up with something creative.
We loved theme costumes. One of my favorite years was when all 5 of us dressed up like the Ronald McDonald gang. I don’t know who had more fun exploring their creativity…us kids, or my mom! She had a blast hand-making each of our costumes, right down to the felt lettuce leaves in Mayor McMac’s bun. Now, I’m not a proponent of fast food, but these costumes were AWESOME! (And yes, that’s me, under the purple covered chicken wire….that was a tough year trick-or-treating!)
Coming up with a costume is highly creative and Halloween is a time to let your inner child run wild. Plus, it’s the very beginning of the whole end-of-the-year holiday season. A time of magical wonder and innocence. A time of great imaginings, inventiveness and artistry.
As an adult, I still love theme costumes. A few years ago we decided to be the Super Kripalanis for Halloween. We poured out our costume bin (yes, we actually have multiple costume bins) and told our kids to create a super-hero outfit from whatever they could find inside. This the is what we got:
What kind of costumes have you conjured up this Halloween? Where has your creativity lead you? Please feel free to share your photos on our Facebook page. We can’t wait to see your creations!
