Got Soul?

Through the ages, scholars as well as all religious and spiritual traditions have contemplated the definition, significance, and nature of the soul. Some people believe that soul simply suggests another word for spirit, and that they’re really one of the same, or that it implies a religious or even a spiritual quality.

You may often hear the word soul used in today’s modern culture referring to a sense of pride in areas such as religion, social customs, food, music, or even dance. I have even heard the word used when expressing a deep-felt emotion: “He put all his heart and soul into that performance.”

I’ve been amazed by the number of definitions, meanings, and references there are for one single word, which itself can mean so many different things to so many different people.

Soul is consciousness. It is my belief that the soul is the true essence of a person. When you look into a mirror and see your reflection, you notice your body, your hair, your eyes, your smile, or even your frown! The reflection looking back at you, the image you see is just your external shell; it’s not who you really are.

The soul is the person within your body. Your personality can oftentimes be an instrument for your soul to express itself in the outside world, and this plays a significant role in how you relate to others and to yourself. No two souls are ever alike. Fortunately, every one of us is uniquely different. It’s your soul that determines who you are and what makes you – you.

Some people ask: “Why should I care about the existence of my soul?”  To put it as simply as I can, I’d say: “Because we’re spiritual beings in a physical body, having human experiences.” Therefore, since you’re both a physical and spiritual being, you should honor all of you. If you go through your days denying yourself the experience of combining these two sides, you’re missing out on so much of what life truly has to offer.

Many people think that material possessions will bring them happiness, fulfillment, and a sense of purpose. Even with all of these things, they’ll often find themselves asking: “Why do I still feel so empty inside?”

People who live a spiritual life and who work from a soul level realize that there is so much more to this life than material things in a physical world. These are the people who get the bigger picture and have a richer understanding of who they are, what they do, and how they live their lives.

Are you the type of person who seeks answers from the outside world or looks within to the power of your soul? Let’s discuss your thoughts about this on my Facebook page.
