Journaling to Deepen Your Self-Discovery & Connection to the Universe

Do you have a practice that allows you to drop in with Spirit when you need to reconnect?

In recent years, there has been a resurgence in the popularity of spiritual practices that allow us, as individuals, to form our own, direct relationship with our Higher Power. This is one of things I love about Oracle Cards. But another often overlooked and yet, incredibly powerful spiritual tool for self-discovery and connection with the Universe is journaling.

Journaling is beautiful, because it’s so accessible. All you need is a piece of paper and pen. And a willingness to explore your inner landscape.

I’m an avid journaler (and have been for over 35 years). To this day, I’m in awe of the incredible growth, clarity, and insight that can come from this simple practice.

Journaling changed my life, and I’ve watched it help countless other people tap into their inner wisdom, access a deeper connection to Spirit, and make meaningful changes in their lives.

If you’ve ever felt blocked when it comes to journaling because you’re worried about not being much of a writer, or about needing some kind of specific knowledge or tools to get started, I’m here to tell you – it can be SO simple!

Follow the tips in this article and you’ll be able to begin exploring a journaling practice, or deepen the practice you have. I’ll introduce you to things like combining Oracle Cards or meditation with journaling, but I’ll also show you how you can get started with just your pen and your intention for a consistent practice.

Overcoming Resistance to Journaling

I’ve noticed that a lot of people feel an initial resistance to journaling.

Maybe because of a bad experience with writing in school, an association with a teenage diary, or a fear of somehow doing it wrong. Another common objection is that journaling feels like it’s just a way to ruminate on the past or all the negative parts of your life.

If you’ve ever felt a block around journaling – whether it’s for one of the reasons above or another reason altogether – I invite you to set your reservations and past experiences aside for now.

Why not open yourself up to the idea that no matter how you’ve felt about journaling in the past, it could be fun, easy, and incredibly helpful to learn how to use journaling for personal growth?

Here are 3 Tips to Help you Overcome Resistance to Journaling:

1. Start small. Don’t set out to write pages and pages all at once. Start with a small goal, such as writing for five minutes at a time.

2. Set an intention. Clearly define WHY you want to start journaling and what you hope to gain from him. This can help you stay motivated.

3. Doodle! Sometimes when I’m feeling blocked or resistant to journaling, I don’t put the pressure on myself to write words. Instead, I just doodle and draw in my journal! Sometimes that’s how I have to get things out of my head, and then there are times that the act of doodling opens up my mind and allows the words to flow in my journal after.

Journaling as a Spiritual Practice: Connect with Your Intuition and Discover Hidden Signs from the Universe

If you’re craving direction on your spiritual path and don’t know where to start, journaling can also be a great way to connect with your intuition to begin feeling more connected to the little signs and nudges from the Universe.

The Universe (Spirit, God, Source, or whatever you choose to call it) is ALWAYS communicating with you. You just have to learn how to tune into the language it’s speaking.

Journaling can support you in this discovery as it will heighten your awareness of the synchronicities and  connections between events, little magic moments, and subtle signs you may be missing.

Your intuition is the language of the Universe, and when you learn to attune yourself to it, there’s a whole world of guidance and magic available to you. If you’re just starting out, you can read more about How to Start Journaling As a Spiritual Practice here.

If you want a simple journaling practice you can easily fit into your life right now, try starting with a simple gratitude journal – writing down what you’re grateful for and why each week. When you start to shift your focus toward these things, you start to notice little miracles often begin happening.

Journaling With Oracle Cards and other Spiritual Tools

One of my favorite ways to take my journaling practice even deeper is to combine it with other spiritual tools.

If you already have a journaling practice, and are hoping to use it as a means to connect with your inner wisdom or feel guided on your spiritual journey, I highly recommend trying one of these combinations.

Even if you’re new to journaling, these tools can actually support you to make journaling feel easier, and to give you a feeling of guidance in your practice.

1. Journaling with Meditation

I love to do a short meditation before a journaling practice, because it helps me get grounded, quiet my mind, and re-focus on my intention for my journaling session.

If you’re a fan of silent meditation, you can simply sit for a few minutes before you start writing to come to a place of calm.

But if you have a hard time sitting still or quieting your thoughts (like I still sometimes do, even after over 35 years of meditation) – try listening to a guided meditation before you begin. My Meditation for Clarity & Guidance is perfect to help you access the right mindset for a productive journaling session. You can listen to it for free here.

2. Journaling with Oracle Cards

Personally, journaling with Oracle Cards is one of my all-time favorite ways to get in touch with my intuition and connect with Spirit. When you use Oracle Cards in combination with journaling, it allows you to get enlisted by Spirit – to go on a journey you wouldn’t expect.

Sometimes it may feel like you don’t understand where you’re being taken at first, but by following the card’s prompts instead of just your intellectual thoughts, you can discover much more than you would through only your own thoughts and feelings.

Using Oracle Cards to journal is like having a mystical witness who guides you through your self-discovery process. If you’re curious about using Oracle Cards for journaling, you can simply ask the question, “What do I need to know for my highest good today?”, then pull a card from your favorite Oracle Card deck. Or pick a card for free with my online Oracle Card deck here if you don’t have a deck of your own yet.

If you want to go deeper with your practice of journaling with Oracle Cards, you can also check out my new Oracle Card Journal, which will guide you through a 40 day process of journaling with Oracle Cards to connect with your deepest self.
