Maybe, given my last name, I should be embarrassed to admit this, but I have never been that interested in my exploring my own potential psychic ability. Maybe it’s because people have always asked if I was psychic like my great grandfather, which is kind of like asking, Can you sing soul like Aretha Franklin or play baseball like Shohei Ohtani? My answer to all three is a definitive: Absolutely no chance.
That doesn’t mean that I don’t trust that psychic ability is real, I do. When I study the Edgar Cayce readings, they resonate with my experience of being alive. I feel myself align more with the person I want to be when I practice living the ideas in the Cayce readings. I know them to be true for me. But I’ve never really been interested in trying to be psychic myself. It’s felt like a little scary, a little off in left field, a little bit like a distraction from all the things I want to be working on in my life. Until recently.
Edgar Cayce was clear that psychic ability is an attribute of every soul, that we are all psychic and I’ve always believed him. I’ve had my own experiences of intuition, I’ve heard many many stories from people I know and love about their psychic experiences. I’ve experienced and been in the presence of deeply intuitive, other level awareness enough to make it easy to believe that psychic ability is very real. What I am becoming clear on is that at this moment in time in humanity inviting our psychic ability into our experience is essential. If I continue to sideline my psychic ability, the attention I give to attending to my intuition, to the energetic forces alive around and within me, I am cheating myself out of the power I have to both experience the fullness of my humanness (my ability to love and be loved) and my ability to transform the world with necessary speed to steer us off the course of self-destruction we are on. Let me pause here to define what I mean by psychic ability. To me, psychic ability is a willingness to pay attention to what our bodies are telling us, the power of our minds to define our reality and our trust in our connection to each other and to the Earth—at a purely energetic level there is no separation, and we are willing to acknowledge and apply that truth to our choices and actions. What I mean by psychic ability is being fully present to my experience in the moment. I mean creating space to be intentional about how I am using mind, my body, my awareness of other people and my surroundings, looking for what is arising, naming it, acting on it and allowing it to change what we think is possible.
Psychic ability has been described as a 6th sense. Imagine if a group of us were put in a room together and told we had to put together a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle but we couldn’t use one of our senses. We were blindfolded. We had to work together, and we had about 200,000 years and then the room would fill up with water, disease and war. Imagine if at year 198,000, we realized we were blindfolded. All we had to do was reach up and take the blindfold off and we could see. Imagine how easy it would be to put that puzzle together.
We’ve learned more than 80 percent of what we know about the human brain in the last 20 years. There are scientific studies from leading universities proving that when we believe something to be true our physical reality changes. What we’ve learned about the placebo effect on physical illness and our experience of pain and healing (links to all these studies included below). Studies are proving that when a group meditates together and brings to mind certain intentions and affirmations their brains sync up. We know our bodies are constantly picking up signs of safety and threat based not on words but on body language, emotion and who knows what else. I believe all this science, and I experience glimpses of this my own life and work.
It’s time to invite psychic ability into the room as the equal she deserves to be with our other senses. She has been relegated to the shadows for far too long in my own life. It’s true, there is still so much we don’t understand and if I were all alone maybe I wouldn’t have guts to shake off the security of only trusting what I can see with my eyes, understand with my conscious brain or hear with my ears, but I am not alone. We are all in this together.
The Edgar Cayce readings provided a path for coming into this fullness of our human experience through the A Search for God material. It’s steady and grounded and doesn’t require anything more than listening to and bringing forth the truth whispering in your own heart. The books and groups provide a container for deepening into personal practices/individual work and commitment, and a group of like-minded seekers with whom to be seen and practice. And we have the example set by the first A Search for God study group about what can happen when we commit to this path. We know that after years of practice, members grew in clairvoyance, precognition, healing ability. Edgar Cayce himself became more in touch with psychic abilities while awake the older he got (and perhaps the deeper his spiritual practices became).
Examples of psychic ability can be breath-taking, and they can also be ordinary. As I study the questions brought by the women in that first group to Edgar Cayce, I see women like me: searching, uncertain, committed. We don’t need to be at our smartest, our most organized, our most lively to be ready to embrace the wholeness of our human potential. We just need to show up, to be present. After all, we’re not trying to find something we don’t already have. All we need is already right here. Maybe that’s what makes me the most nervous, but I am reminded of Nelson Mandela’s words, “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that most frightens us.” We are powerful beyond measure, and, now more than ever, we need all that power each moment. As we surrender again and again to trying to fit our puzzle pieces together into the big jigsaw we’re all working on.
